Indie Music Spotlight: Justin Nozuka

by Marion McMillan on March 18, 2009

At some point in the not-too-distant past, some industry exec at some corporate label figured out the Top-40 Formula: add two parts gaudily overproduced arrangement, five parts mind-numbing hook, $10 million of some mass-marketing machine oil, and a dash of [insert talentless, industry pawn here.] Stir it all up and you’ve got a hit!

Every so often, though, an artist comes along with the talent and charisma to upset the natural order of things.

The thing that impresses me the most about Justin Nozuka is his ability to effortlessly infuse the poetic lyrics of one song with the wisdom and emotional desperation of a 65-year old sinner-turned-curbside evangelist, and then flip the script on the next track and belt out a bluesy, funked-up love song like he was born to do it.

Plus, he knows the classics and isn’t afraid to put his own twist on them.

Now signed to indie recording label Coalition Entertainment, Nozuka turned down a deal from Universal because he wanted to “record an album on my own, with my own freedom”. He’s been doing his thing for just over two years now, and it appears his belief in himself is starting to pay off. He’s no Flo Rida—thank God—but I’ll put money down that this guy is gonna make a splash.
