On Tuesday, I posted two music videos and expressed how listening to a song—audio-only—then listening to a song with a short film attached like those can create a whole new experience.
Well, this takes that concept to the nth degree. Introducing J Dilla — Nothing Like This and The Format — First Single.
Dilla’s is a driving, forceful beat that certainly makes you head bop even as you notice how unique it is in today’s hip-hop field. But then you add a video like this to it and you realize the once-generic lyrics can be morphed into a ballad about love, loss and redemption. It’s tough not to get fully invested into his.
The Format’s, which was actually originally made for another band and song entirely, although I don’t care at all since it works so well for this, is an upbeat, catchy kinda tune. Then you pair it with this music video and suddenly the lyrics take on new meaning:
“You know me, or you think you do / You just don’t seem to see. / I’ve been waiting all this time to be something I can’t define.”
A lost boy run away from home…yeah, that sounds like something he might say. And if this isn’t the cutest milk bottle you’ve ever seen in your life, then I hereby do not respect your opinion of milk bottles or music videos.
But am I right? Powerful messages and very deep characters out of a three minute clip. Impressive the way music videos can give the songs we know and love completely new meanings.
